ABE comprises an office of full-time staff based in New Malden, along with representatives all over the world. We also have a Council and Education Committee whose purpose is to guide and advise on policy matters.

These individuals hold an ambassadorial office which reflects their continued commitment to the educational aims of ABE. We are delighted to have Dr. Edward de Bono as our President and some outstanding Vice-Presidents who represent the best in contemporary business thinking.

ABE President

Dr Edward de Bono

Edward de Bono is acknowledged by many as a leading authority in the field of creative thinking and the direct teaching of thinking as a skill. He has written over 70 books which have been translated into over 40 languages.


Professor Dr Paul Brown

Prof Dr Brown is a former Chair of Psychology at the State University of New York. He now runs a successful management and training business and has provided corporate training for companies such as Procter & Gamble.

Sir Cary L Cooper

Sir Cary is Professor of Organisational Psychology and Health in the Lancaster University Management School and Pro-Vice Chancellor (External Relations) at Lancaster University.

Lord Tomlinson

Lord Tomlinson is a former Labour Member of Parliament and Member of the European Parliament and has been closely involved in business education for many years. He is currently Chairman of the Association of Independent Higher Education Providers.


The ABE Council acts as the final decision-making body of ABE in policy and education matters. Like the Education Committee, it comprises people with extensive experience and expertise in their field.

Keith Ramsay - Chairman

An highly experienced commercial executive, Keith has considerable experience and knowledge of working in a number of sectors over the past 25 years, with a focus on strategic management, skills, coaching and business growth in the face of an ever-changing customer base. He has developed key skills around business and organisational transformation, cultural change, turnaround and efficiency programmes and has experience at both Board and management levels of Operations, Organisational Development, Cultural Change, Business Support and Strategic Development in the public, private and the not-for-profit sectors.

He is currently Deputy Chair of NHS Vale of York and chairs the Board at Incommunities Commercial Ltd. part of the Incommunities Group, one of the country's largest housing providers.

Professor Steve Bristow

Professor Bristow established Open Direction Ltd in 2002, following appointments as Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glamorgan and Principal of Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology. A specialist in governance, assessment and quality assurance, he has been Education Consultant - Strategic Relationships for the Australian Council for Educational Research, Chief External Examiner for the Institute of Directors and Head of Inspection Services for BAC. A member of the National Quality Council of the Kosovo Accreditation Agency, the Quality Standards Group of UK NARIC and a QAA Enterprises Associate, he has also been President of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.

Dr Catriona Shuba

Dr Catriona Shuba is both a trained teacher and a qualified dental surgeon and has worked extensively as a recruitment consultant in many different countries. She brings to ABE wide international experience, particularly in Southern Africa and India. She has also lectured at a university in Namibia.

Dr Ceridwyn Bessant

Ceridwyn is currently the Associate Dean, International, at the Newcastle Business School and the School of Law, which are part of Northumbria University. With 24 years in Higher Education, he has significant experience, knowledge and understanding of the sector and the work of other academic institutions. Ceridwyn is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), and member of the CIPD’s national Qualifications Advisory Group.

Education Committee

The Education Committee acts as the policy making body of ABE. It comprises a number of distinguished professors and academics with many years’ experience of UK and international education.

Professor Tom Baum

Prof Baum is a Professor of International Tourism and Hospitality Management, and Director of Postgraduate Courses at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

Dr Terry Butland

Dr Terry Butland is the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor International and Marketing, of Middlesex University. He is a qualified physicist and, before moving to higher education, spent his career in research and management posts in the nuclear power industry.

Mr Robert Hurley

Mr Hurley is an Adviser Team Manager with UK Trade & Investment. He has sector responsibility for Education & Professional Training and is the lead adviser for the China, Korea and Africa markets. He has held various board level and senior managerial positions with multinational companies, working in Europe and several African countries such as Benin, Ivory Coast, Senegal and Togo.

Lynette Borrow

Lynette is the Curriculum Manager at the International Business School at South Thames College. With an MBA in Education Management from Nottingham University, Lynette is a highly qualified and experienced further education management specialist.

Executive Team

The Executive team comprise key members of the permanent staff based in Surrey, who are responsible for both the day to day and strategic development of the organisation.

Gareth Robinson - Chief Executive

Gareth has been a Chief Executive and Managing Director for over 17 years. In the past, he has taken a number of global medium-sized enterprises public, and has raised over $100m in corporate finance. As well as bringing a wealth of experience in the IT services and publishing sectors to the CEO role, Gareth has a fundamental passion for education, which informs his vision for ABE – to give ABE members not only the tools they need to succeed in business, but also a membership organisation that they can be proud to belong to.
Gareth holds a degree in Economics and a Masters in International Business Studies, both from the London School of Economics.

Kate Winter - Director of International Marketing

Kate is a skilled brand manager who has marketed professional certification schemes for The Treasury, The World Bank, ISACA and CESG (part of GCHQ). She joined ABE to head up its marketing department from APMG International where she was responsible for web strategy, social media and brand. As a member of APMG’s senior management team Kate played a key role in bringing innovations to market. She is now sharing this experience for the benefit of ABE students and partners. Kate holds a BA (Hons) degree in Philosophy and Theology from the University of London and a Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism from the London School of Journalism. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.

Mark Louw - Director of Finance

Mark joined ABE in April as an experienced Senior Finance Executive, who has a strong background within the SME sector and experience in establishing and leading Finance teams, negotiating and generating funding and strategic influence both in the UK and Africa. In addition, Mark has contributed to wider commercial aspects and operational effectiveness for the businesses he has worked with.

Lisa Sarjeant - Director of People

Lisa is a qualified Chartered Fellow of CIPD with over 25 years experience in people management and development, with her last role as Director of HR, Facilities and Organisational Development for the CIPD sitting on the Senior Executive Team. Prior to this she worked in HR roles for the London Fire and Civil Defence Authority and ISS, an Independent Computer Consultancy. Lisa is also a non-executive Director for the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing. Lisa has recently joined ABE to support the strategic growth plans through developing ABE’s people strategy, culture and capabilities.

Kenneth Tan - Business Analyst

From a background in business and IT, Kenneth joined ABE’s membership team in 2000, and was membership manager up to mid-2011. He is responsible for ensuring and improving the performance, productivity and efficiency of departmental and organisational operations.

Bradley Wade - Managing Director, ABE Africa

As an experienced professional in strategic business development, sales and marketing both locally and internationally at a senior level, Bradley’s forte is leading and developing sales and business development strategies and teams towards real outcomes. He has been delivering profitable growth by successfully taking products and services to new and complex international markets across a variety of industries for over 15 years, with specific extensive experience in the transnational private education sector in Africa, The Middle East and Asia. Having worked with both NCC Education and Study Group in the Education industry, Bradley is excited to be heading up ABE Africa, working closely with the African area managers and centres to establish ABE as the first choice of education and skills development for current and aspiring business professionals.
